FAQ: The 10 Most Asked Questions About Functional Mushrooms

Functional mushrooms generate a lot of curiosity — and sometimes just as many misconceptions. At Hymne, we regularly receive questions from our customers about the nature of these ingredients, their use, and their legal framework. Here are the 10 most frequent questions, with clear, honest answers that comply with Swiss regulations.

1. Are functional mushrooms medicines?

No. In Switzerland, food supplements based on functional mushrooms are foodstuffs within the meaning of the ODAl — not medicines. They cannot claim to treat, diagnose, or cure a disease. Any brand that makes such promises operates outside the Swiss legal framework.

2. Can they be consumed daily?

Hymne food supplements are designed for regular daily use. Regularity, in fact, is key to a consistent integration into a wellness routine. The recommended dosage is indicated on each bottle and must be followed. If in doubt, a doctor or dietitian can advise you.

3. What is the difference between an edible mushroom and a functional mushroom?

An edible mushroom — button mushroom, shiitake, chanterelle — is consumed primarily for its classic taste and nutritional qualities. A functional mushroom refers to a species whose composition of bioactive compounds (beta-glucans, triterpenes, hericenones, etc.) is of particular interest in mycology research. The distinction is not absolute — some species are both edible and functional — but it reflects a different use and context.

4. Are functional mushrooms safe?

The species used by Hymne — reishi, agaricus, hericium, and polyporus — have been consumed for centuries in various cultures and are subject to safety studies. They are integrated into formulations in compliance with the food safety requirements of the Swiss ODAl. That said, as with any food supplement, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or those undergoing medical treatment, should consult a healthcare professional before taking them.

5. Why liquid extracts instead of capsules?

The liquid form offers several practical advantages: it does not require excipients (binders, anti-caking agents, gelling agents) often present in capsules, it lends itself to easy integration into a daily ritual, and it allows for precise formulation of active ingredients. This is the choice Hymne has made for its entire range.

6. Can the three Hymne formulas be combined?

Hercule (morning), Venus (day or morning), and Morpheus (evening) are designed as a complementary routine. Their compositions do not overlap problematically under normal use at recommended doses. For any specific situation — medical treatment, chronic illness — consult a healthcare professional.

7. Are Hymne formulas vegan?

Mushroom extracts are naturally plant-based. The collagen peptides used in Venus are 100% vegan. The entire Hymne range is formulated without animal-derived ingredients.

8. How long does it take to feel the effects of a food supplement?

Hymne makes no promises about felt effects, their nature, or their onset time — such claims are not permitted in Switzerland for food supplements. What we can say is that the micronutrients present in our formulas (zinc, iron, vitamins C, B6, B2, biotin) contribute to normal bodily functions, as recognized by the OALDal. Regular intake is a determining factor in any nutritional approach.

9. Can functional mushrooms interact with medications?

Certain species of functional mushrooms have been studied for their potential interactions with certain medical treatments, particularly anticoagulants. Hymne cannot provide medical recommendations on this subject. If you are undergoing treatment, it is imperative to consult your doctor before starting a course of food supplements.

10. Where are Hymne mushrooms cultivated?

Hymne selects its raw materials according to rigorous quality and traceability criteria. The formulas are developed and produced in Switzerland. For any specific questions about the origin of ingredients, our team is available via the contact page on the website.
