Functional mushrooms: what are they really and why are the Swiss interested in them?

In recent years, functional mushrooms have found their way into Swiss wellness routines. Reishi, Lion's Mane, Agaricus, Polyporus… these evocative names come from Asian mycology, but their popularity is growing steadily in Europe. But what exactly are they? And why has Hymne, the first Swiss brand of liquid functional mushroom food supplements, focused on them?

What is a functional mushroom?

A functional mushroom is a species whose natural composition — particularly in polysaccharides, beta-glucans, triterpenes, and other bioactive molecules — has attracted growing interest from the scientific community. Unlike ordinary culinary mushrooms consumed for their taste, functional mushrooms are integrated into the diet for their specific nutritional richness.

In Switzerland, they are regulated by the Foodstuffs Ordinance (ODAl) and the Food Supplements Ordinance (OCpAl). They can be subject to nutritional and functional claims authorized by the FSVO, provided they are rigorously substantiated.

The four mushrooms at the heart of the Hymne range

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) Used for over two millennia in Asia, reishi naturally contains polysaccharides and triterpenes. At Hymne, it is a component of Hercules, the supplement designed to support your active days.

Agaricus blazei Originally from Brazil, agaricus is rich in beta-glucans, natural fibers belonging to the polysaccharide family. Its unique biochemical profile has been studied since the 1960s and it is valued in the Hercules formula to complement the action of reishi.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) Also known as "lion's mane," this mushroom contains hericenones and erinacines — rare molecules that are the subject of numerous scientific publications. It is central to Morpheus, the Hymne formula dedicated to supporting your nights.

Polyporus umbellatus Documented for centuries in Asian pharmacopoeias, polyporus is rich in bioactive polysaccharides. It is included in Venus, a supplement focused on skin well-being and feminine vitality.

A liquid formulation: the Hymne choice

The liquid form allows for practical integration into your daily routine. The mushroom extracts offered by Hymne are formulated in Switzerland, combining fungal active ingredients with vitamins and minerals whose reference nutrient intakes (RNIs) are recognized by the FSVO: vitamins C, B6, B2, zinc, biotin, iron, and glutathione.

As such, and in accordance with Swiss regulations, certain legally authorized nutritional claims apply. For example, vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair.
